Problematic Use & Addiction
Gaming has become an ubiquitous problem that affects children of all ages. During the COVID pandemic, even the WHO recommended online gaming as an appropriate socialization tool. Some estimated that about 6 - 12% of the general population in Asia suffer from gaming addiction, clinically known as "Internet Gaming Disorder" (IGD).
With students who struggle with problematic gaming, we usually start with a deep dive interview with parents and teachers first to understand what the underlying issues are. This can range from social isolation, family issues, stress, lack of purpose, and so on.
When we meet with the students, we try to understand their point of view and structure individualized therapy through:
Traditional talk therapy like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which is considered the most effective treatment option
Develop practical coping strategies to help students improve their awareness and figure out ways to self-help
Establish support network especially through peer interaction
Collaborate with parents to create healthier habits and implement lifestyle change to combat the effects of problematic gaming
