Counselling uses a person-centered approach to help individuals, couples, and families to better understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Counsellors usually focus on areas like goal setting, enhancing well being, and improving relationships. They can also assist people to overcome life problems and manage mild-moderate mental health issues.
Unlike clinical psychologists, counsellors do not assess, diagnose, or treat mental health conditions. Counsellors usually work with individuals and families on a client-identified issue, which may change from session to session.
Some common services counsellors provide include:
General emotional and mental health support
Child and adolescent counselling;
Family and relationship counselling;
Sports performance counselling;
Career counselling; and
University and school counselling
Clinical psychologists are also trained in counselling. And will often incorporate counselling techniques as part of a psychological treatment plan.
